Greetings Fair Readers:F2P_FrugalHound

Frugal Hound here. I’ve commandeered the blog for the third installment of my enterprise journalism column, Frugal Hound Sniffs. Today, I have the distinct and joyful pleasure of sniffing a fellow greyhound, Belle from Free To Pursue.

While as a journalist I’m free from bias, I will share that I am heavily biased towards fellow greyhounds. I hope you enjoy Belle’s lovely responses and glorious photos.

1) Who are you? What are you? And who are your parent(s)?

I’m a greyhound named Belle and I live in Canada with my parents Mr. and Ms. F2P. It was quite an adjustment for me because I used to race in Florida. Isn’t Florida where people go to retire? I guess I got it backwards. The lady of the house writes the blog Free To Pursue. I edit her work by having her read it to me out loud, but I never ask for credit of any sort – all good writers need a p-ruff reader, plus I get to have a sneak peek at all the material before it hits the blogosphere.

2) What frugal tips and tricks does your human use in your pet care regime?

My owners did their research and found out how easy I would be to take care of. I’m a low maintenance girl. Other than getting my nails trimmed once every 4-6 weeks, they do the rest themselves: brush me, walk me, brush my teeth, bathe me and feed me great grain-free kibble from Costco (topped with meat or egg-based goodies). They exchange dog sitting with family members when they can’t take me with them, which allows them to save on pet sitting as well as ensures that I have a familiar place to stay. They also do get my teeth cleaned once a year because I refuse to do dog-like things such as chew toys or raw hide (yuk!).

3) Favorite treat?

Meat of any kind: steak leftovers, beef or chicken broth from the slow cooker, beef or chicken jerky, eggs, fish, liver…it’s…all…SOOOOO…good!

4) Favorite toy?F2P_2

Toys? Belle does not “do” toys. I do get excited when the leash comes out though. You could say the outdoors is the ultimate play thing for me.

5) What’s the most expensive thing you’ve destroyed?

Nothing yet. I guess I’m just too frugal…seems like such a waste. I’d rather dream about it instead.

6) Most embarrassing moment?

When Ms. F2P made me wear pantyhose. I KNOW!!! She made me wear them so that I would leave alone the bandage covering stitches on my leg. Ms. F2P figured pantyhose would fit my waist and force me to keep away from the incision, which it did. Luckily, she made sure there was a hole in the seat for me, otherwise, it could have been even more embarrassing when I had to, you know, go.

7) How often do you get a bath and would you say it’s too often?

I don’t care to be bathed, so I make sure to stay out of grimy places. I won’t even go past my ankles when I go to the lake. They still bathe me twice a year, despite my best efforts. I stand very still so that it can be over as quickly as possible. Luckily, my fur takes a long time to get stinky. Otherwise, I know they’d do it more often – no thanks.

8) What is your family’s financial plan or goals and how do you contribute?F2P_4

I retired from the racetrack when I was about 3 years old (paw bump to Frugal Hound, who I hear retired at the same age) so I don’t bring in any income at this point, though I do dog sit about 2 weeks a year, so I guess that’s still something.

My family lives on a combination of entrepreneurial, and other paid, activities. They enjoy them, despite being in a position to retire (FIRE status = green). You know humans, they have to keep themselves busy, otherwise they get themselves into trouble. I’m happy with their choices though. It keeps them around the house most of the time and it’s a good thing because I can keep an eye on them and I make sure they get outside on a regular basis. It’s a pretty easy thing to do: just make them believe you “have to go.” It works every time. I guess you could say I’ve trained them well.

9) What is your best skill?

I warm up the room. Once I’m there, everyone’s in a better mood. If someone is ill at ease, I just go say “hi” by gently leaning into them and within minutes they’re able to strike up a conversation with another individual of the human persuasion. What can I say? It’s a gift.

10) What is your greatest weakness?

Stairs. I. Just. Don’t. Do. Stairs. Period.

The End.

Thank you so much, Belle! You look epic running through the snow. My mom tries to photograph me running, but so far she only has blurry photos of my butt and the ground.

Mrs. Frugalwoods here: I want to thank Ms. F2P for submitting this fabulous interview! If you haven’t checked out her blog, Free To Pursue, do so now! Seriously, it’s awesome.

As Free to Pursue shared in question #2, greyhounds are a particularly frugal breed of dog. If you’re interested in reading more about why Mr. FW and I chose to adopt a greyhound, check out my post on Frugal Hound’s expenses. Thinking about getting a pet? Are you a pet?

Do you have something to share with the internet? If so, answer my Frugal Hound Sniffs: Exclusive Interview Questions and have your parents email them to my mommy: mrsfrugalwoods@gmail.com (I can’t believe they won’t give me my own email account) and you’ll be featured in an upcoming issue! While I know we are more than just our images, please do send photos too.

  1. Awe how cute! So growing up we had an afghan hound and what I love about hounds is their long snout. My mom used to take panty hose and put if over Natasha’s nose to “play elephant.” It was hilarious because N would sway side to side like an elephant trying to get it off. Hounds are truly joyous creatures. 🙂

    1. OH I love the long snouts! We’ve never played elephant with Frugal Hound before… though we did do that sock over her snout for Monday’s post… 🙂

  2. Aw, greyhounds are adorable! I’ve actually never thought about adopting one before…not sure why. I guess I always thought they would be expensive to adopt. Thanks for dispelling that! I’ll have to reconsider. My boyfriend is always back and forth on a dog, as he feels bad it’ll be left alone while we’re at work, so it’s good to hear they enjoy napping.

    1. The OK-alone-during-the-day thing is actually one of the primary reasons we got a greyhound. They are so happy to snooze the day away and actually prefer napping to constant activity. Doggie daycare would be Frugal Hound’s worst nightmare :). She’s happy and we save money! If you have any greyhound-related questions, feel free to hit me up anytime. I love talking about them (in case you couldn’t tell… ) 🙂

  3. Such a pretty lady! I’m really impressed that she hasn’t destroyed anything. I guess she has much more of an interest in early retirement than my dogs…..

    1. I was impressed with that too! She’s just a good girl I think! Awww, Barefoot Barker–don’t you want your parents to retire early?

  4. Belle definitely went an unusual direction leaving Florida to head up north for her retirement. =) Hope she has fond memories of the sunshine state, nonetheless.

  5. Oh My God!!! That was hysterical! I recently had the honor of meeting Belle’s parents in person at the 2014 World Domination Summit. I bet they didn’t bring her because, while they are quite a fun and humorous couple, Belle would have stolen the show!

    1. Greyhounds are not always able to ascend stairs with ease. Frugal Hound definitely has a hard time with steep or slippery steps!

  6. One of my friends took in 3 (!) rescue greyhounds. That’s a lot of energy 🙂 I was supper confused seeing Belle at first (I thought I forgot what Frugal Hound looked like for a sec) but I absolutely love her colouring and markings.

    1. They really are wonderful little additions to life. Frugal Hound keeps us grounded and makes us enjoy & focus on the present. Plus, she’s hilarious 🙂
