You didn’t think I’d let a holiday sneak by without weighing in, did you?! Impossible! I am a known lover of holidays and above all, the trifecta of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. I live all year for these three. I moved to Vermont so that we could have picturesque fall leaves and snowy white Christmases.

I have a giant fir tree in my yard and, the other day, my older daughter looked out at it–covered in snow as it was–and exclaimed, “is that a Kimiss tree, mama?!” I’ve succeeded in parenting.

Since it’s not Kimiss season quite yet (not until this Friday, thank you very much, at which time I will most definitely be putting up our Christmas tree), let’s delve into the scrumptiousness of Thanksgiving!!!

Thanksgiving is in my top three holidays for the following reasons:

  1. There’s no gift giving!

How on earth do you meet a partner and date frugally? This is a timeless question of love and finance that I’m asked as predictably–and nearly as often–as the sun rises and sets. Seriously, it comes up a lot. But the problem is that I’ve been married to Mr. Frugalwoods for over 10 years and we met in college–at ages 18 and 19–when frugal dating was the norm. I didn’t personally navigate the trenches of meeting and dating as an “adult,” so I don’t have first-hand experience to share. Enter: Reader Suggestions.

As has been our theme with Reader Suggestions lately, I’m focusing on topics that I don’t have personal experience with and thus, that I can’t offer concrete (or good) advice on. Last month we broached frugality with teenagers (waaaaay outside of my wheel house considering my house consists of a 2-year-old and an 8-month-old). And this month, we’re dipping a toe into the sometimes treacherous waters of dating.

People love to ask me about saving money with kids and lucky for these people, I LOVE talking about saving money with kids! There’s just one teensy, tiny problem: my kids are young. Super young. As in, one of them can’t even crawl yet…

So while I have a broad base of ideas to share on saving money with infants, babies, and toddlers, that’s pretty much where I max out on my personal experience. For handy dandy reference, here are just a few of the posts I’ve written on this absorbing topic:

  • Fighting Back Against The Baby Industrial Complex
  • The Gear You Actually Need For Your Baby (Or The Next Baby Shower You Attend)
  • How I Make My Own Baby Food and Other Frugal Parenting Tales
  • How To Fly With A Baby. On An Airplane. By Yourself.
  • Our Thrifty And Simple Baby’s First Birthday Party
  • How I Remain Frugal While Pregnant (!!!)

Sure, I could extrapolate and make stuff up about saving money with older kids, but in my experience, giving advice on stuff you haven’t done yourself is–uh–not a great idea.

Today we’re discussing how to stay motivated when working toward a longterm goal (which you probably guessed based on the title… ). This is a special edition of doubly solicited Reader Suggestions! I first asked, in our Frugalwoods Facebook Group, what you all wanted to read about in upcoming installments of the Reader Suggestions series and then I selected a question and asked everyone to respond. I love hearing what YOU want to read about, so keep your suggestions coming! I plan to refer back to that conversation thread to select future Reader Suggestions. If you’re wondering what topics we’ve addressed in the past, check out the Reader Suggestions category. It’s important to me that I address the issues you all are struggling with and want to read about, so don’t be shy in letting me know what you’d like to discuss here together.

This month’s question was requested by a number of folks and I selected it because it’s a question I’ve received many, many (MANY) times over the years.

What does it cost you to work? I never once (not one single time) considered what I was paying to maintain my job until I read the OG financial independence book, Your Money Or Your Life, which has an entire section devoted to outlining the ways in which many of us pay to work. Hold on a minute, Mrs. Frugalwoods: don’t I get paid to work and not the other way around? Well, yes, you do (hopefully) get paid to work, but have you ever considered just how many of your monthly expenditures are in service of your job? Your Money Or Your Life details all of the things we spend on for our jobs that we wouldn’t spend on if we didn’t have our jobs, including:

  • Transportation (bus/subway pass, bicycle maintenance, car costs, gasoline, and–most crucially–our time)
  • Clothing, shoes, and accessories
  • Haircuts, manicures, and beauty products
  • Dry cleaning
  • Professional memberships/associations
  • Lunches out at work
  • Dinners/cocktails after work with colleagues

In addition to all this stuff directly related to being at work, there’s a slew of costs associated with having less time and thus needing to pay people to do things for you while you work, such as:

  • Childcare
  • House cleaning
  • Dog walking
  • Meal preparation (take-out, restaurants, convenience foods)
  • Laundry service
  • This list could go on for quite some time….

Reader Suggestions Of Practical, Useful Ideas For A Wedding Registry http://www.frugalwoods.com/2018/05/24/reader-suggestions-of-practical-useful-ideas-for-a-wedding-registry/ http://www.frugalwoods.com/2018/05/24/reader-suggestions-of-practical-useful-ideas-for-a-wedding-registry/#comments Thu, 24 May 2018 10:00:02 +0000 http://www.frugalwoods.com/?p=17634 Reader Suggestions Of Practical, Useful Ideas For A Wedding Registry

Next month, Mr. Frugalwoods and I celebrate TEN years of wedded bliss! Our marriage is, in many ways, the backbone of our frugality and journey to financial independence. Over the years, I’ve written about the role that our partnership plays in our financial decisions and the importance of being on the same financial page with your partner. But today, I want to discuss the lighter, fluffier side of getting married: the wedding registry!

Apparently a lot of you are getting married soon (congrats!) because I’ve received quite a few questions about the sometimes-dreaded, sometimes-loved topic of wedding registries. It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the endless lists of things you’re supposed to include on a wedding registry (champagne flutes AND martini glasses? Really?). And that little point-and-register scanner thingy in the Crate & Barrel doesn’t help matters.

It’s the worst intersection of impulse buying and, if you’re not careful, you’ll end up with a bunch-o-junk you do not need.

Reader Suggestions Of Cheap And Fun Things To Do This Summer http://www.frugalwoods.com/2018/04/27/reader-suggestions-of-cheap-and-fun-things-to-do-this-summer/ http://www.frugalwoods.com/2018/04/27/reader-suggestions-of-cheap-and-fun-things-to-do-this-summer/#comments Fri, 27 Apr 2018 10:00:51 +0000 http://www.frugalwoods.com/?p=17349 Reader Suggestions Of Cheap And Fun Things To Do This Summer

Although I’m having trouble believing it, seeing as I’m looking out over a landscape of snow (and actually we’re in the middle of an ice storm at the moment… ) summer is coming! For the first time since way back when I was in school, summer has an actual meaning this year. Now that our oldest daughter is almost 2-and-a-half, she has a fairly packed schedule during the year. She goes to preschool two mornings a week, to several different free playgroups throughout the week, and we have playdates with friends all the time.

We love this diversity to our days and Babywoods thrives on these social encounters (as do I!). The problem, I’ve recently learned, is that all of this stuff STOPS in the summer! Le eek!!! Preschool stops, the free playgroups run by the elementary school AND the library stop, and a lot of our friends are headed off on vacation!

Reader Suggestions On How To Exercise For Free (Or Cheap!) http://www.frugalwoods.com/2018/03/30/reader-suggestions-on-how-to-exercise-for-free-or-cheap/ http://www.frugalwoods.com/2018/03/30/reader-suggestions-on-how-to-exercise-for-free-or-cheap/#comments Fri, 30 Mar 2018 10:00:22 +0000 http://www.frugalwoods.com/?p=17090 Reader Suggestions On How To Exercise For Free (Or Cheap!)

I am SO EXCITED about this month’s Reader Suggestions because it tackles a topic that comes up over and over again as folks try to slim down their monthly spending: EXERCISE! Paying to exercise is something many of us do without even considering the impact on our budget because it’s for a good cause. And yes, exercise is good! But it’s not something you have to pay for. Much like the #1 fave frugal topic–food–it’s easy to ignore that gym membership line item in a monthly budget simply because it’s ultimately a “good” thing. But just like food, there are ways to get at the same end for less.

Before we go any farther, I want to point out that sometimes, paying to exercise really is the best decision and I’m all about spending on your priorities. If a gym/CrossFit/yoga membership is one of your highest priorities and you don’t have an option for frugalizing it?

Reader Suggestions: What To Pack For Lunch (And How To Remember It)! http://www.frugalwoods.com/2018/02/26/reader-suggestions-what-to-pack-for-lunch-and-how-to-remember-it/ http://www.frugalwoods.com/2018/02/26/reader-suggestions-what-to-pack-for-lunch-and-how-to-remember-it/#comments Mon, 26 Feb 2018 11:00:41 +0000 http://www.frugalwoods.com/?p=16769 Reader Suggestions: What To Pack For Lunch (And How To Remember It)!

Food, glorious food! This month’s Reader Suggestions is devoted to none other than the very favorite, the preeminent, the most-discussed, most-loved/hated aspect of frugality: FOOD! Specifically, bringing food with you wherever you go. We all know it’s expensive and (often) unhealthy to buy our lunches out while at work, or run through the drive-through while running errands, or stop off for coffee in the afternoon.

And yet… I hear from many of you that this is the #1 challenge you face in bringing yourselves to the next level of savings every month. We just did the Uber Frugal Month Challenge together as a group in January and many of you cited food–specifically food purchased while at work or out-n-about–as the biggest hurdle you overcame.

People were busting their previous savings rates JUST by being more mindful about what they ate! Not only is this the epitomization of frugality, it’s also healthier!
