Weekly Woot & Grumble: We’re On The Podcast Airwaves!

It’s all woot this week! Mr. Frugalwoods and I were interviewed by the lovely and talented Shannon of Financially Blonde for her awesome podcast today, Martinis and Your Money. You can listen to Mr. FW and I discuss extreme frugality, our decision to pursue financial independence by age 33, and our plans for a rural homestead. Head on over to Financially Blonde to hear our frugal and fabulous interview!

In other news, Mr. Frugalwoods and I are leaving town this morning for a long weekend in the Vermont mountains. We’ll be visiting homesteads for sale with our realtor, hiking, and staying at a farm where the owners have graciously offered to teach us their homesteading tips and tricks. Huge thanks to Justin from Root Of Good who provided a $25 off Airbnb coupon, which we used in booking our farm stay.

Mr. FW and I plan to have an off-grid weekend, so we won’t be around the ol’ internet these next few days. I hope you all have a rejuvenating weekend and I’ll see you Monday!

That sounds lovely. Have a wonderful trip.

  2. Oh, this is EXCITING! All the way around! Have a great time! Looking forward to hearing all about it when you get back! 😀

  3. Alicia says:

That all sounds so great! I listened to the first 2 minutes of the podcast but was then sidetracked by the fact that one of my cats was missing (we found him, but he was outside for 12 hours over night) – but I will listen to it over the weekend. Have a great time in Vermont!

    • Mrs. Frugalwoods says:

Oh my goodness! I’m glad he’s ok! Poor cat. He was probably trying to escape that tiny dog sweater you bought… 😉

  4. Always glad to help anyone save $25! You’ll have to let us know how the Airbnb experience turns out. Enjoy the internet free break away from the grind!

  5. Even Steven says:

Anytime I hear off the grid, I immediately think of living in a cave or paying for an apartment for 1 year with cash, running from the law paying only cash for everything, and not letting my picture get taken, maybe a little Bourne Identity action.

    • Mrs. Frugalwoods says:

Hahah! Not exactly what we did :). More like we hiked around in the woods all weekend long and just didn’t open our phones or computers 🙂

  6. Kara says:

Okay, I’ll see you guys this weekend! JK I’m probably much further north than you’re staying! 🙂 Have a great weekend! I’m looking forward to listening to the podcast!

  7. Jeff says:

If you get a chance, make sure to stop at the pittsfield general store!

    • Mrs. Frugalwoods says:

That looks like a neat place! We weren’t far enough north on this trip–just down near Brattleboro. Thanks for the recommendation though!

  8. Ryan says:

Have fun! We are going to Vermont and New Hampshire over Thanksgiving with the hound. We might hike Mt. Monadnock or the Madame Sherri Forest with its spooky castle ruins near Brattleboro. I’ve never been, but it seems up your alley.

    • Mrs. Frugalwoods says:

Oh how fun! Mr. FW hiked Mt. Monadnock last fall and really loved it. We’ve never been to the Madame Sherri Forest–we’ll have to check it out next time we’re up there. Thanks for the recommendation!

  9. Jayleen says:

Sounds like a great weekend that invests in your future! A weekend unplugged sounds fabulous! Have loads of fun!

  10. I hope you guys enjoy your weekend away!!!! Thank you so much for joining me, I loved chatting with the two of you and think the podcast turned out awesome!

    • Mrs. Frugalwoods says:

Thank YOU so much! We loved the conversation too! I was so glad to hear that we sounded like ourselves–I’m always afraid I’ll do something funky with my voice. But, we sounded exactly like we sound :)!

  11. Have fun this weekend! I’ve always wanted to go to Vermont, and looking forward to listening to your podcast this weekend!

  12. That’s very exciting weekend, you might find THE homestead!

  13. Cool interview I heard it you guys rock with an 80% savings rate (spoiler Alert), Shannon is a great host. Have a good weekend in the great VT. (Never been that far up on the map, on the east side) You guys are homestead shopping and are still 2 years away from FI. Interesting.

    • Mrs. Frugalwoods says:

Thanks so much for listening! I appreciate it! We indeed might buy the homestead now even though we won’t be moving out there full-time for another couple years.

  14. Oh I can’t wait to hear more about your rural homestead. I hope you write many posts about it! I’m always curious about “different” setups like that – well different from someone who has lived in a large metropolitan area their entire life 😉

    • Mrs. Frugalwoods says:

Good to know! I am indeed planning on writing more about what we’re looking for, the types of properties we’re exploring, etc. It’s a fairly complex process (as we’re learning), so it would definitely help me to write it all up. And, it’s a totally different set-up from what we’re used to as well!

  15. Have fun! You should do a post with an example of a property you were looking at and the pros and cons.

    • Mrs. Frugalwoods says:

Thank you! Will do! I’m trying to organize my thoughts about all these properties and what better way than to write it out!

  16. Mr. FI says:

It’s always interesting (to me, at least) hearing people’s voices. It’s especially so in this case because you don’t have pictures of your face. So it’s always fun to gain some insight on the people who you basically know through words.

Also, to Mrs. Frugalwoods, my mom was also a nurse and my dad a teacher (academia). I think the lesson here is if you have that combo for parents, you’re destined for early retirement.

    • Mrs. Frugalwoods says:

Thanks so much for listening! Hope we didn’t sound too weird (or I should say, hope we sounded just weird enough 😉 ). That’s interesting about your parents! Mr. FW’s mom was also a nurse and his dad has taught university courses, so I suppose we had the double whammy of parenting!

  17. Steve says:

It’s always funny how we create our own images and tones when restricted to one medium of communication (writing) and then hearing/seeing it totally different from what we had imagined – like when you read The Hunger Games, then went and saw the movies afterwards.

    Anyways, great podcast!!

    • Mrs. Frugalwoods says:

Hah! What did you think we sounded like? Now I’m worried… ;). But I know what you mean, I had that same experience with Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings. Thanks for listening!

  18. Tawcan says:

Sounds awesome, have a good trip. Very cool podcast, thanks for sharing.

  19. Barb says:

Mrs. Frugalwoods! Would you please please please write a post all about your frugal lifestyle when you were in Americorps in NYC? When I first moved out here 6 years ago, I survived on about 16k/year but lifestyle inflation has since taken hold and I would love to get some frugspiration.

    • Mrs. Frugalwoods says:

Hi Barb! I’d be happy to! Might take me awhile to get my thoughts sorted out, but I’m glad to know you’d be interested. Meantime, you might enjoy my Uber Frugal Month challenge, which is all about tapping into your inner frugality :)! Thank you so much for stopping by and saying hi!

  20. I just listened to the podcast on Shannon’s site. I learned from you both. There was so much fun in there! I loved your topic and am inspired by your story you shared. Goodluck Mr and Mrs Frugalwoods.

  21. Happy to hear you had a great time. Sounds like my type of vacation!

    • Mrs. Frugalwoods says:

It was wonderfully relaxing! I love being out in nature like that. Good thing we’re planning on moving to the woods 🙂
